Abstract
The effect of sealing methods on the deterioration of anodic alumina in alkaline medium was studied. Sealing process of anodic alumina was realized by using ammonium hexafluorozirconate (Zr) sealant and boiling water sealing (HS), respectively. The sealed specimens were immersed in alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide with pH 8 and pH 11, respectively. Decorative, morphological, and structural changes occurred on the specimens after long-term exposure in the alkaline media. Electrochemical and surface morphological techniques were used to analyse samples. Reaction of the specimen's surface with alkaline environment causes transformation of boehmite formed after sealing to bayerite and contributes to the changes on the surface of the treated specimens. Acceptable results concerning decorative changes after long term exposure in the alkaline environment at pH 8 are achieved for ammonium hexafluorozirconate sealant on anodic alumina.
