Abstract

(for fluorous solid-phase extraction (F-SPE) of fluorous compounds including catalysts, scavengers, reagents, small molecules, and biomolecules; HPLC stationary phase for analysis and separation of fluorinated and nonfluorinated compounds) Physical Data: free-flowing white powder, SPE-grade silica gel, 8.5% carbon loading, average particle size 40 μm, average pore size 60 A, bulky density 0.56 cm3 g−1, loss on drying ≤ 1.0%. HPLC-grade silica gel, average particle size 5 μm, average pore size 90 A. Form Supplied in: Fluoro Flash® silica gel is a product of Fluorous Technologies, Inc. (www.fluorous.com). The SPE-grade silica gel (40 μm) is available in 2–20 g cartridges and in plate format. The HPLC-grade silica gel (5 μm) is available in analytical, semipreparative, and preparative columns. Fluoro Flash® silica gel can also be packed in pipette tips and LC trap cartridges for proteomics applications. Preparation Methods: fluorous silica is commonly prepared by silylation of silica gel with dimethyl[2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl]silyl chloride or other perfluorinated silyl chlorides.1 Handling, Storage, and Precautions: similar to C8 and C18 reverse-phase silica gels, there is no particular hazard associated with fluorous silica gel and it may be stored and handled in air.
