Abstract
A poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode based on chloro[tetra( m-amino-phenyl)porphinato]-manganese (T( m-NH 2)PPMnCl) and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether ( o-NPOE) in the composition 3:65:32 [T( m-NH 2)PPMnCl: o-NPOE:PVC] exhibits Nernstian response to fluoroborate ion in the concentration range 5.1×10 −7–1.0×10 −1 mol l −1, with a wide working pH range from 5.3 to 12.1, and a fast response time of 15 s. The electrode shows good selectivity towards BF 4 − with respect to common coexisting ions, which is better than that of the electrode reported in the literature. Several electroactive materials and solvent mediators have been compared and the experimental conditions optimized. The electrode is applied to the determination of fluoroborate in electroplating solution samples with satisfactory results.
