I. Is there a place for a fluoride tablet, drop, pill, lozenge in pediatric practice? A. For the child (or the individual) whose drinking water comes from a fluoridated community water supply, no. An optimal fluoride concentration is provided (for tooth health), and the chance is too great that for children under the age of 8 added fluoride would increase the incidence and severity of enamel mottling. In communities where the water supply is naturally fluoridated to concentrations of 0.5 part per million (ppm) or more, additional fluoride should not be given for the same reason. B. For the individual whose drinking water comes from a community water supply that is fluoride free (less than 0.5 ppm) , or from a private well or other source that is fluoride free, a qualified yes. 1.
