Abstract

Abstract Standard fluorozirconate ZBNA and ZBLA glasses have been used to enamel aluminium pieces. The interface glass/metal has been characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. The exothermal process which occurs at the interface involves an oxidation-reduction reaction: zirconium is reduced to a lower oxidation state. An enameling temperature has been determined for each case. This temperature is about 410°C for ZBNA and 440°C ZBLA. Less successful attempts have been carried out with aluminium-based glasses. Further studies are needed for enameling large parts.
