Amann is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Microbiology at the Technical University in Munich. After receiving his PhD from the Technical University in 1988 he joined as a postdoctoral research associate the group of Prof. David. A. Stahl at the University of Illinois in Urbana- Champaign. There work was focused on the iir sitrr identification of sulphate-reducing bacteria in sulphidogenic biofilms and of fibredigesting bacteria of the genus Fibrobncter in the intestinal tract of ruminants and nomuminants by rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probing. fn 1990 he returned to the Technical University in Munich where he established a research group in the area of molecular microbial ecology. This group is concentrating on the methodology of iii situ hybridization, on the development and testing of group and species-specific probes and on their application to environmental samples.
