Fluorescent lighting: Application of 'TL' 5 lamp to offices, shops and public buildings

Abstract

The 'TL' 5 lamp is the latest step in the development of fluorescent lamps. The main design parameters for the new lamp were miniaturisation, reduced cost of ownership, and environmental friendliness. Miniaturisation has been achieved by a reduction of the lamp diameter by 40% to 16 mm. This offers the opportunity to reduce the size of the luminane optics by 40% as well. Reduced cost of ownership has been accomplished through increased efficacy —104 Im W-1 — without loss of lamp lumen maintenance and lifetime, which allows energy savings of 25% to be realised. Environmentally friendly characteristics are a drastic reduction in the amounts of material and energy required to manufacture the lamp, and a reduction in mercury content to only 3 mg.
