Abstract

The fluorescence properties (excitation, emission and lifetime) of Cr3+ ions in natural Eosphorite crystals (AIPO4 (Mn,Fe) (OH)22H2O) have been systematically investigated in the temperature range 10 – 300 K. This ion shows the two emissions 2E → 4A2 and 4A2 → 4A2 typical of an intermediate crystal field material giving a spectroscopic parameters very similar to those reported for Alexandrite what makes this host a possible candidate for tunable laser applications.
