Abstract

Fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been measured in an atmospheric flame at temperatures ≈1200–1500 K. The spectra do not differ greatly from those at lower temperatures (≈400–500 K), indicating little net change in vibration on excitation. Inverse electronic relaxation between S 1 and S 2 states in pyrene is observed.
