Abstract

Tb 3+ fluorescence measurements on the hexagonal phase NaYF 4 are reported. The mechanism of the cross-relaxation process between the 5D 3 and 5D 4 levels is predicted by the Inokuti and Hirayama model in the case of quadrupolar interaction leading to a critical distance of 12 Å. In the total range of Tb 3+ concentration the energy transfer characteristics are evaluated and the results show that the dominant energy transfer process is diffusion-limited.
