Abstract

Bismuth silicate (Bi4Si3O12, BSO) and bismuth silicate–germanate (Bi4Si3(1−x)Ge3xO12, BSGO) crystals were grown with the modified Bridgman technique. The fluorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) of the crystals were investigated. An additional excitation peak around 297 nm was found in the fluorescence excitation spectra of BSGO by comparison with that of BSO, and the relative height of this peak increases with the increase in Ge content in BSGO. The emission spectra of BSGO crystals almost share the same spectrum shape of BSO, and tend to shift towards longer wavelength with the increase in Ge content. TL glow curve’s shapes of BGSO are similar to each other but show a great difference to that of BSO.
