Abstract

Absorption and fluorescence spectra and the relative quantum yields of fluorescence of riboflavin and rhodamine-B in various solvents were studied. The spectral shift in the fluorescence emission due to solvent effect is explained in terms of the universal solvent scale. The change in the quantum yield of fluorescence in different solvents is accounted for by the assumption that there is a shift in the relative positions of the lowestππ + andππ * singlet and triplet states of the molecule.
