Abstract

Fourteen female patients with urinary frequency and incontinence and proven detrusor instability were treated with flunarizine 20 mg as a single daily oral dose for one week and with placebo in another in a double-blind, crossover study. A highly significant shift from urgency and incontinence towards normal voiding occurred when the flunarizine limb of the trial was compared with the placebo limb (p<0·01). Cystometry, done after both treatment periods, showed a trend towards improvement in bladder capacity and delayed first sensation on flunarizine (0·05<p<0·1). Side-effects were trivial and did not warrant drug withdrawal. Hypotonicity of the bladder and subsequent overflow incontinence, probably due to idiosyncratic sensitivity, developed in one patient.
