Abstract
Abstract : This report describes the initial phase of a study of the fluid motion in a container that is spinning and nutating. The moments exerted by this fluid motion on the container have been demonstrated to cause serious flight instabilities of shells with liquid payloads. The initial phase of our study concentrates on the relevant dimensionless parameters and equations that govern the fluid motion. Various special cases are discussed. Our analysis and aims at supporting ongoing experiments at Chemical Systems Laboratory (CSL) and Ballistics Research Laboratory (BRL) and at providing a link between measurements of despin moments and side moments. It also prepares for an in- depth analysis of the interior flow field for comparison with flow visualizations at CRDC.
