Abstract

Experimental studies in isothermal steady state conditions with laminar flow of Newtonian fluids is carried out for fluid flow and heat transfer through spiral coils. Based on the viscous and form drag existing in pipe flow innovative analogy equations have been developed for laminar and turbulent flow through spiral coils considering the curvature ratio (DiD) and pitch to diameter ratio (PDi) of the curved coils. Dependency of analogy equations on the geometrical parameters of the spiral coils is investigated successfully. Also, an innovative general analogy equation is suggested for curved coils. Innovative correlations for fluid flow and heat transfer through spiral coils of different geometries is developed and validated based on Dean number and Reynold's number. Nine spiral coils with (DiD) ratio ranging from 0.019 to 0.0301 and (PDi) ratio ranging from 1.88 to 6.31 are used in the present study.
