Abstract
The paper discusses the odd-even fluctuation of the various thermodynamic properties of two homologous series of nematic liquid crystals near the nematic/isotropic transition temperature. A new alignment phenomenon not previously discussed in the literature (associated with horizontally aligned films between glass substrates) is reported. The degree of alignment near the nematic/isotropic transition temperature increases, while the order parameter decreases, reversibly with increasing temperature. Development of a rigorous theory of anisotropic intermolecular interactions to interpret quantitatively these experimental observations is suggested.
