Abstract

In this paper, a hybrid metamaterial patch antenna having a broad E-plane beamwidth is presented. To obtain the broad E-plane beamwidth of a patch antenna, a TM 010 (λ/2) mode and a zeroth-order resonance (ZOR) mode are combined at the same frequency. To generate the TM010 mode and the ZOR mode simultaneously, a mushroom antenna and a rectangular patch antenna with an etched rectangular hole are used. The mushroom antenna is inserted in the rectangular patch antenna, and a single feed is added between two radiators. As a result, the E-plane half power beamwidth (HPBW) of the proposed antenna is measured as 115° and broadened by 53 %, compared with that of the conventional patch antenna. Moreover, the antenna has the radiation efficiency of 92%.
