Abstract

The flow behavior of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids has been examined in a two-roll mill. Both flow visualization and laser Doppler velocimetry techniques were utilized. It was found that the Newtonian fluid exhibits a flow pattern that remains the same with increasing roller speed and a velocity profile that remains symmetric with increasing roller speed. However, the non-Newtonian fluids exhibit flow pattern changes and velocity profile asymmetry as a function of roller speed. Differences in flow behaviour of the newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid were related to normal stresses (due to both shearing and extension) that occur in this flow geometry.
