Abstract

The use of a homodyne microwave technique using a Gunn diode as the c.w. radiation source is described. Radiation scattered from a target in motion is mixed with a sample of the outgoing signal resulting in a beat frequency due to the Doppler frequency shift in the scattered radiation. The technique appears to show promise of a range of applications in the monitoring of transported material; initial trials have mainly concentrated on pneumatic conveying.
