Abstract

The issues of flow control in packet-switching computer networks is discussed, including the reasons why it is required and several proposed mechanisms for its implementation. Flow control schemes used in the ARPANET are analyzed to show concrete examples of strengths and weaknesses. Future trends in hardware are examined to point out possible influences on flow control problems and solutions.
