Abstract

Measurements were obtained with a combination of surface taps, hot-film anemometry, and laser Doppler velocimetry to characterize flow around an airfoil whose upper and lower surfaces diverge downstream from 90% of chord to form a blunt trailing edge. Vortex shedding occurred at Strouhal number of 0.21 at least in the range of Reynolds numbers from 2×105 to 2.8×106. Distributions of mean pressure, mean velocity, and turbulence quantities in the attached boundary layers and downstream wake were obtained at a Reynolds number of 2.5×106 and provide insights into their importance to the aerodynamic drag of blunt airfoils.
