Abstract

In this paper, a novel surfactant styryl phosphonate mono-iso-octyl ester (SPE108) was first introduced as a collector for the flotation of malachite. The flotation performance of SPE108 to malachite was investigated by micro-flotation tests, which displayed that SPE108 is a stronger collector than SPA. Solution chemistry analyses, computational calculations and contact angle measurements inferred that SPE108 exhibited stronger affinity to malachite and stronger hydrophobicity than SPA. The adsorption mechanism of SPE108 to malachite was evaluated by zeta potential measurements, FTIR and XPS analysis. Two binding geometries were suggested, one with the formation of single bond P-O-Cu, another with the formation of a four-membered ring complex.
