Abstract
Florida's Noise Control Program had its beginning in 1971, when the Florida Legislature amended the statutory responsibility of the Florida Department of Pollution Control (now Department of Environmental Regulation) to cover noise, as well as air and water pollution. The history of the Noise Control Program is outlined with emphasis placed on major difficulties encountered and significant accomplishments. The status of two existing program elements, motor vehicle noise control and local noise program assistance, which are both supported by a unique low‐cost system involving five Florida Universities, is discussed. In closing, the program's overall planning philosophy of defining “excessive” noise, identifying noise sources, and controlling “unnecessary” noise is reviewed.
