Abstract

This paper examines if the passage of the Stand your Ground Law in Florida had any impact on its violent crimes and gun-deaths. We use the Synthetic Control Method which allows us to mimic what the outcome would have been in the absence of the law. A comparison of the actual and the synthetic Florida shows that the law led to an increase in gun-deaths (with and without suicides) but had no significant impact on violent crimes. We also do not find evidence that the law has resulted in criminals substituting towards property crimes.
