Abstract

Florid reactive periostitis is an increasingly recognized neoplasm of the hand that presents as a painful, bone-producing mass of the digit. Other names for this neoplasm include pseudomalignant osseous tumor of the digits, 1 extraosseous localized non-neoplastic bone and cartilage formation, 2 fibroosseous pseudotumor of the digits, 3 and florid reactive periostitis. 4 Landsman et al. recommended that authors adopt the term florid reactive periostitis. 5 The differential diagnoses include osteosarcoma, parosteal osteosarcoma, periosteal osteosarcoma, periosteal chondroma, periosteal chondrosarcoma, osteomyelitis, and giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath.
