Abstract

On April 15, 1941, two and a half months after Dr. Howard P. Doub assumed the editorship of RADIOLOGY, Florence Roper entered the newly established Detroit office as secretary. To her secretarial duties she soon added those of a general editorial assistant, for which she was peculiarly fitted by education and earlier experience. She had a large share in the preparation of the Twenty-Year Cumulative Index of Radiology, covering the years 1923–1942, and of the three succeeding five-year indexes. It is, however, her work in building up and maintaining the Abstract section that was her outstanding contribution to the Journal. For several years prior to her retirement at the end of 1967, she was wholly responsible for this service, which reflects her excellent judgment and remarkable memory. Florence was born in Indiana but spent her childhood years on an Ohio farm. She was graduated from Denison University (Granville, Ohio) and shortly thereafter became associated with the Toledo (Ohio) Clinic, where she remained as secretary and general office assistant for some ten years. She came to Detroit in 1940 and worked for a few months in the Jennings Memorial Hospital before joining the staff of RADIOLOGY. In 1954 Florence was married to Lester A. Jeffery, an engineer with the Chrysler Corporation. In their lovely home at Orchard Lake, Michigan, she was able to indulge her love of gardening and her deep interest in the life of the out-of-doors. She was a long-time member of the Detroit Chapter of the National Audubon Society and she and her husband took great pleasure in studying the birds in the nearby fields and woods. Florence Roper Jeffery was a tireless worker, giving to RADIOLOGY the best that she had, often working far into the evening to complete some urgent task. She was a devoted wife, a loyal friend, and a stimulating companion. May she rest in peace!
