As the Journal of Wound Care (JWC) is the official journal of WUWHS we are launching this special edition, for its members, to showcase excellence in wound care. The supplement, which will have two issues next year and its own editorial board, contains work from the world wide wound care community. In this issue we have four articles one each from the US, UK and Italy. There is also an article by members of the International Compression Club (ICC), a sister society of WUWHS, ‘The Static Stiffness Index: an important parameter to characterise compression therapy in vivo’ by Partsch et al. In the past year, in JWC has published other papers from WUWHS' supporting societies; an international collaboration led by the Italian Nursing Wound Healing Society (AISLeC) ‘Recommendations for the management of biofilm: a consensus document’1, and ‘Classification of dependence-related skin lesions: a new proposal’2 by Spanish Pressure Ulcer and Chronic Wounds Advisory Panel (Spanish initials, GNEAUPP). In the coming years I hope this supplement will become the ideal home for national and international collaborations, proposal and recommendations for wound care along with high-quality research and practice.JWC is also involved in a number of projects for the Florence meeting. I am particular excited by the JWC WUWHS Awards, which will be held on the Tuesday night. The awards aim to recognise excellence in wound care over the four years since Japan 2012. We will be gathering in the Scherma Hall, Fortezza da Basso, for drinks, food and entertainment, followed by the awards ceremony and, possibly my favourite part of the evening, cocktails on the terrace. As I write this, nominations have closed and by the time you read it the judges' marks will be in, to remain a closely guarded secret until the evening! WUWHS has a new initiative where the title Rising Star will be given to a number of young scientists for their contribution to the scientific programme. At the awards ceremony, three of the rising stars are to give a short presentation to the assembled nobility of the wound care world, after which—in a talent show style—a keypad vote will determine the winner. Finally, if you are in Florence be sure to pick up a copy of the WUWHS Daily newspaper, which will be available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with all the latest news form the conference along with articles on specialist areas, tourist information and even a daily weather report. You can also express your views via the daily vox pops and on Twitter (@WUWHSDaily).Enjoy the supplement and the excellent commentary and work within.
