Abstract
A new diatom species, Florella pascuensis Navarro, is described from marine waters around Easter Island, Chile. Examination in LM and SEM revealed that this diatom differs from the only other known species in the genus, F. portoricensis Navarro, by virtue of the morphology, orientation and number of its rimoportulae, weakly sigmoid sternum, and the presence at each pole of two longitudinal rows of large, dash-shaped areolae. The new species is compared to Striatella unipunctata (Lyngbye) C.A. Agardh, with which it can be easily confused in girdle view during routine LM observations.
