Abstract

This paper explores performance as a hermeneutic by featuring a performance in an interdisciplinary class at Northwestern University. Using Kai T. Erikson's Everything in its Path: Destruction of Community in the Buffalo Creek Flood as a sociological starting point and MM. Bakhtiris The Dialogic Imagination as a theoretical starting point, the designers of this performance constructed a dialogue between an Appalachian community and an academic community so that the seams and struggles between different cultures could be exposed and explored. The resulting dialogue provoked an understanding of the constructed, contingent, and invented quality of both cultural and personal identities.
