Flood Forecasting and Flood Warning System in the Lower Yellow River

Abstract

This paper deals with the development and problems of flood forecasting and flood warning on the lower reaches of the Yellow River, and some suggestions for improving the work are also made according to experiences obtained in the past 30 odd years and current development and techniques of flood forecasting and flood warning at home and abroad. Influenced by sediment, unsteady river bed and human activities, floods on the lower Yellow River are very complicated in nature bringing a lot. of difficulties to flood forecasting. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, great achievements and many experiences have been obtained in the work of flood forecasting and flood warning on the lower reaches of the Yellow River. Flood forecasting has played an important role in flood protection. However, many problems remain to be solved. In order to improve flood forecasting and flood warning on the lower Yellow River in steps, a system of telemetering precipitation and stage and on-line real-time flood forecasting has begun to be set up in the sub-watershed between Sanmenxia to Huayuankou, at some hydrological stations in the lower reaches and in the floodplain on both banks of the lower Yellow River.KeywordsFlood PeakFlood ProtectionFlood ForecastRunoff DepthFlood WarningThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
