Abstract

ALTHOUGH INEXPERIENCED NEW nurses entering an NICU receive a thorough orientation, new nurse managers may be given office keys and a limited formal education that generally focuses on task-oriented functions, such as interviewing, appraising, and disciplinary processes. Borrowing from themes used by Michael Levine in describing how to survive challenges in one’s personal life, this article presents eight basic principles of leadership that can help the novice manager keep afloat when flooded with challenges and demands.1
