Abstract

This chapter examines the evolution of flight in bats. It looks into some basic aerodynamics principles such as aerofoils, flight theory, and the mechanics of flapping flight, and applies them to bats. It analyses the bats' wing morphology and flight performance in relation to ecology by illustrating the wings' aspect ratio, wing loading, and wing shape. It describes the factors in determining flight power of bats and calculates the maximum range and power speeds. It considers the advantages of flight and the physical demands on bats in discussing the physiological and biomechanical aspects of flight.
