Abstract

In recent years, multimedia algorithms have proliferated vastly in the telecommunications, entertainment, and educational spheres. Proprietary methods of multimedia generation and presentation have given way to common inter-operable standards brought about by the efforts of international standards bodies like JPEG, MPEG, DVD and others. For designers of multimedia systems, adherence to these mandatory international standards as well as a quick time to market their products have become necessary goals. For quick design turnarounds, the need to lay out new silicon with emerging standards must be obviated. Chip designers have started filling in this need by designing media and graphics processors that are programmable and therefore afford a flexible software based approach to multimedia system design as compared to the traditional hardwired approach. These first generation of multimedia processors will definitely become more sophisticated in architecture and computation power with the passage of time, thereby enabling product manufacturers to develop systems that allow consumers to easily explore the offerings from the world of multimedia.
