Abstract

Working populations across the Global North are ageing rapidly, meaning that human resource practices that address the needs of older workers are increasingly important. Flexible working is one of the five strategies recommended by Centre for Ageing Better that supports extended employment for older workers. This chapter explores flexible working and discusses formal flexible working arrangements that meet the needs of older workers. It shows how these arrangements need not be formal and policy-driven but can be arrived at both via personalised arrangements and informally. The chapter considers the offer and take-up of flexible working before concluding with some practical recommendations for accommodating older workers’ needs for flexibility and for extending their working lives. Definitions of flexible working arrangements usually comprise temporal flexibility, variations in time worked and spatial flexibility. Elder care refers to looking after older dependants, often parents.
