Abstract

In the field of information processing a need for more effective computer-based interactive information systems has been identified. Effectiveness is defined in terms of costs of systems development, operation, and modification, in terms of quality of systems constructed, as well as in terms of their usefulness for end users. In this context the issue of the quality assessment for interactive information systems is being addressed. It is suggested that the construction of flexible software models (prototypes) could substantially improve the process of the quality assessment for interactive information systems. From this point of view the prototyping should be viewed as a means for interactive validation of requirements specifications. In concrete terms the prototype suggested is a laboratory system which allows tests for technical, functional, operational, and usefulness qualities in a real-world environment. It does not only provide an exploratory and an experimental environment, but it is also designed and implemented as an evolutionary system (certain parts of it will be included in the “final” system). The implications are that this prototype has to meet a quality software standard with the following attributes: reliability, enhanceability, maintainability, compatibility, and portability. The applicability of this approach for the quality assessment of interactive information systems is being demonstrated by introducing the project which aims to develop a flexible software model (prototype) of an integrated system for information resources management. This prototype serves as a toolbox for the development of a specific information system and allows “easy” modifications and enhancements based upon results of quality assessments at various system levels.
