Abstract

The cover image illustrates a high-performance, stretchable, photovoltaic module that combines microscale, dual-junction GaInP/GaAs solar cells (i.e., 2 J microcells) in an interconnected square array, mounted on a structured substrate of the elastomer poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The raised features of relief on the PDMS provide mounting locations for the microcells; notches on the four sides of each feature accommodate thin ribbon interconnects that buckle downward into the separating trenches. This layout allows for reversible, elastic responses to large-scale deformations and, at the same time, naturally limits their magnitudes to avoid damage to the interconnects and microcells, even when the latter are present at high areal coverages. For further information, please read the Communication “Stretchable Semiconductor Technologies with High Areal Coverages and Strain-Limiting Behavior: Demonstration in High-Efficiency Dual-Junction GaInP/GaAs Photovoltaics” by J. A. Rogers and co-workers beginning on page 1851.
