Abstract
Due to market requirements towards more diversification and short term variations within the production program, Flexible Automation (FA) has become important not only for mass production but also for medium and even for small scale manufacturing. Organizational consequences of FA will be discussed in this paper through a sociotechnical view. Some conclusions, especially concerning education and training demands for the introduction of Flexible Manufacturing Systems, are made from observations in four Japanese factories.
