Abstract

New techniques and procedures are now under development, regarding the supervision and control of ships during navigation from a shore centre: they are made possible thanks to the reliable and high-quality communication links offered by the maritime satellites systems. In this paper, the actual situation of the data collection and transmission from ships to the ship owner's offices is examined and the possible trends are indicated, pointing out the necessity of regular connections (ship-to-shore and vice versa) in such a process of tele-control, as a basis for advanced procedures for ships and fleet management. The Italian Laboratorio per l'Automazione Navale of the C.N.R. (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) has promoted studies and sea implementations in order to seek the optimum solutions. The Italian P.T. Ministry has also cooperated. An Italian programme started at the beginning of 1979, with a campaign in cooperation with the DFVLR (Deutsche Forschungs-und Versuchsanstalt fuer Luft-und Raumfahrt) of the German Federal Republic. The paper refers to the general philosophy and some details of this programme.
