Abstract
Flavonoids are phytocompounds with varied chemical structures and are found in various fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants. Flavonoids offer a wide range of health-promoting effects and play a major part in developing nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and medicinal products. They can be used to treat many diseases, including atopic dermatitis (AD). Atopic dermatitis has significantly increased proinflammatory mediators, cytokines, histamine, tyrosine kinase, and oxidative stress levels. Therefore, the antioxidant, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities of flavonoids are beneficial in inhibiting various pathways linked to the formation of atopic skin. This article focuses on the pharmacological activities and mechanisms of action of flavonoids which are reported to treat atopic dermatitis. Furthermore, the article emphasized different flavonoid delivery systems, such as liposomes, emulsions, nanoparticles, microneedles, microsponges, hydrogels and organogels, which show promising results while treating atopic dermatitis.
