Abstract A study was made of abruptly disturbed filaments photographed at 10 sec intervals through an Ha filter having a 1/2 A bandpass. The abrupt disturbance in each filament was initiated during the occurrence of a major flare at a separate location on the solar disk. All of the filaments studied exhibited an oscillating action shifting from the center of Ha to the red wing and then the the blue wing. As many as four complete oscilla- tions were observed, with each filament oscillating at its own characteristic frequency. The range in frequen- cies of oscillation was found to be 1.5 to 10 complete cycles per hour. These flare-initiated filament oscillations appear to be distinctly different from the normal sporadic changes in filaments.
