Abstract

Viruses isolated from mosquitoes in Iowa, USA, between 1966 and 1980 and identified by complement fixation with a Flanders virus antibody were determined to be Flanders and not Hart Park virus, as shown by comparative complement fixation and neutralization tests. From 1966 through 1980, mosquitoes were collected throughout Iowa and processed for virus isolation. One of the viruses routinely tested for was Flanders virus. A total of 213 Flanders virus isolates have been recovered from mosquitoes, primarily Culex . Forty-one species of wild birds were bled and tested for antibodies to Flanders virus by passive hemagglutination tests. Antibodies to Flanders virus were detected in 7 adults and 14 juveniles of the 1333 birds tested.
