Abstract
Airway management presents one of the most challenging and stress-provoking scenarios in the air medical environment. Imminent loss of the airway provokes anxiety in even the most seasoned medical professional. Mastery of both didactic information and requisite clinical skills is essential before the clinician encounters the difficult airway. The authors' paradigm of airway management incorporates situational awareness into difficult airway scenarios.1 The situational awareness paradigm focuses on a logical stepwise approach to addressing the difficult or deteriorating airway and emphasizes the clinician's physiologic response to the corresponding condition of situational awareness.
