Abstract
One of the consequences of the trend for downsizing is a more restricted range of engines with a smaller displacement. This could spell the end for the five-cylinder engine. Professor Stefan Pischinger, managing director of engineering services provider FEV, investigates the prospects for this concept from the perspective of design space, acoustics and potential performance.
