Abstract

In 1984 a season of survey was undertaken on the Edomite plateau (Hart and Falkner 1985; Hart 1986) during the course of which it was realized that an analysis of the material would be much facilitated by stratified material from soundings. No pre-Iron Age or post-Classical ceramic material was available from excavated contexts in this area and the period between the Edomite and Nabataean cultures remained obscure. Undoubtedly the Classical and Islamic sequences will be clarified upon the final publications of Petra and U dhruh but these are not due for several years and it was felt that some interim material, however minimal, would be useful. With these ends in mind, five sites (Fig. I) were chosen to be sounded in 1985: one Chalcolithic (Khirbet Qurein North); one late Iron Age (Ghrareh); two Nabataean and Iron Age (Khirbet al-Megheitah and Khirbet Ishra); and one Islamic and late Classical (Khirbet Ain jenin). In the event the Classical finds were somewhat disappointing but useful Chalcolithic, Iron Age and Medieval material was· recovered.
