Abstract

• Five new germacrane sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from Salvia Petrophila . • These sesquiterpenes are unusual with an endocyclic double bond in the γ-lactone ring. • All new compounds exhibited moderate anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. Five new germacrane sesquiterpene lactones, petrophins A–E ( 1 – 5 ), were isolated from the whole herbs of Salvia petrophila . The structures were established using spectroscopic analysis (1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS) and compatible with values in the literature. These sesquiterpenes are unusual with an endocyclic double bond in the γ -lactone ring. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on the LPS-induced nitric oxide production using murine macro-phage RAW264.7 cells.
