Abstract

The present chapter deals with the historical reasons why Haiti is caught in what appears to be a secular economic decline, which in all probability has been going on for at least a century.1 There is a strong case for approaching Haiti’s economic plight from a historical standpoint. The chapter singles out what I believe to be the five most decisive events in Haiti’s economic history so as to reconstruct an interrelated series of historical phenomena which explain the country’s current economic disaster.KeywordsNineteenth CenturyDominican RepublicEconomic HistoryDecisive EventLand ReformThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
