Abstract
With the development of economic modernization, population growth, and changing patterns of water demand, water resources are becoming one of the key subjects for sustainable development in China in the 21st century. This article presents five current important water issues directly related to sustainable development in China. The general descriptions of several case studies, such as Yellow River desiccation, water demand in the plains of the Yellow, Huai, and Hai rivers, and regional planning in the Yellow River Delta, are incorporated in the paper. Realizing the water issue is also a social problem that the pure scientific method can no longer solve, comprehensive efforts combining the technological, economic, planning, and legal measures are proposed. Based on extensive data and technical information, this paper illustrates various important aspects of the integrated water problems and promotes appropriate solutions to the challenge of sustainable development of water resources in China
