Abstract

This chapter introduces the main themes of the book and explains why a focus on Kent Cooper is an effective way of tracing the history of Associated Press, the evolution of journalistic practices in the United States (including the notion of objectivity), and the development of an international news system between 1910 and 1950. It sketches Cooper’s early life and early career in journalism, leading to his being hired at AP in 1910.
