Abstract

A macroscopic-microscopic method with the finite deformed Woods-Saxon potential is used to calculate shell corrections in superheavy nuclei. The Green's function oscillator expansion method and the generalized Strutinsky smoothing procedure are applied. It is shown that the spurious contribution to the deformation energy along the fission path due to the unphysical particle gas appearing in the standard method can be as large as 1 MeV, being almost independent of deformation. So, its effect on fission barrier heights is small.
