Abstract

ObjectivesTo describe the activities in Physiotherapy Units, the profile of the population served and their physiotherapy treatment. MethodsA retrospective descriptive study was performed using physiotherapy records of new patients seen in the first five months of 2012 in the Physiotherapy Units of Health Care Centers «Arroyo de la Media Legua and General Ricardos» of the Community of Madrid. The proportional stratified random sampling method was used. ResultsThe physiotherapists acted independently. They followed protocolized guidelines and carried out educational activities for health during consultations and treatments. There was a predominance of female patients (71.90%) and those over 65 years (52.38%), referrals for cervical spine syndromes (19.55%), individual treatments (100%), by combined therapies (100%), which mainly included thermotherapy (91.80%), with a mean 10.80 sessions per patient. Average time between referral and the first appointment was 43.23 days. DiscussionThe performance of activities of Education for Health, the use of combined therapies and the number of sessions according to the protocols are worth noting. The results on home care and group activities, the most prevalent diseases, therapeutic resources applied and waiting time were similar to those reported in the literature. ConclusionsIn the Units studied, physiotherapy activities were conducted independently and in accordance with current regulations. Home care and groups activities as well as the time devoted to teaching, research and management should be increased in order to improve physiotherapy care.
